Espaillat (es-pei-YAT), province (433 sq mi/1,121 sq km; 1993 pop. 197,617), N Dominican Republic, on the coast; Moca; 19°30'N 70°27'W. Crossed by Cordillera Septentrional and including central sect. of Cibao region (La Vega Real). One of the most fertile and densely populated parts of the country. Agr. (coffee, cacao, tobacco, rice, corn). Highway passes through Moca from Santo Domingo. Other centers are Salcedo, Tenares, Veragua.
