Ashtabula (ASH-tuh-BYOO-luh), city (1990 pop. 21,633), Ashtabula co., NE Ohio, on L. Erie at the mouth of the Ashtabula R.; 41°54'N 80°49'W. It is a port of entry on the St. Lawrence Seaway and receives large amounts of iron ore bound for Pittsburgh. Coal is also shipped. Mfg. includes transportation equip., chemicals, plastics, fiberglass prods.; tourism is a developing industry. Settled c.1801 by New Englanders, inc. as a village 1831, as a city 1891. A campus of Kent State Univ. is located there.
