Disappointment, Cape
 
 
Disappointment, Cape, projecting into the Pacific Ocean, Pacific co., SW Wash., on N side of the entrance to estuary of the Columbia R. It was named in 1788 by English Capt. John Meares, who rounded it when searching for the fabled R. of the West and was “disappointed” because he could not enter the river (see Northwest Passage). Fort Canby Historical State Park and Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center are on the cape. Fort Columbia State Park to E. Town of Ilwaco at base of cape, on river.
