Delaware and Hudson Canal, historic waterway, 107 mi/172 km long, bet. Honesdale, Pa., and Kingston, N.Y.; built 18251829 to link Pa. anthracite coal fields with Hudson R. valley and N.Y. City; 41°36'N 74°26'W41°40'N 74°24'W. It operated profitably until the 1860s; increasing RR competition caused its abandonment in 1899. The 1st locomotive in the U.S. ran in 1829 on a RR line built to serve the canal. No longer in use.
