| Haines, village (1990 pop. 1,238), SE Alaska, on Chilkoot Inlet, arm of Lynn Canal, and 75 mi/121 km NNW of Juneau, 15 mi/24 km SSW of Skagway; 59°14'N 135°26'W. Tourism; fishing and fish processing. Site of state fair; Chilkoot dancers. During World War II a highway, the Haines Cut-off, was built connecting Haines with the Alaska Highway at Haines Junction (B.C.). N terminus of Alaska ferry system. Docks near former Chilkoot Barracks, previously site of Fort William H. Seward, U.S. army post. |
