Cancún
 
 
Cancún (kahn-KOON), city (1990 pop. 167,730) and township, Benito Juárez municipio, Quintana Roo state, SE Mexico; 21°10'N 86°49'W. An internatl. resort, and Mexico’s most popular, Cancún is known for its beautiful beaches, agreeable climate, and luxurious hotels and facilities. Built in the early 1970s at a location selected with the assistance of a computer, Cancún is an entirely new, planned city and resort area. Its success has been rapid, but not without problems, foremost among which are providing adequate living conditions for the resort’s workers and controlling development impacts in environmentally sensitive zones.
