Brazos Island
 
 
Brazos Island, extreme S Texas, 3 mi/4.8 km SE of Port Isabel; a barrier beach c.4 mi/6.4 km long, bet. Laguna Madre and Gulf of Mexico; bridged to mainland. Here is Boca Chica (resort) beach region (swimming, fishing), of which isl. is a part, extending c.8 mi/12.9 km S from Brazos Santiago Pass separated Brazos Isl. from Padre Isl. (to N) to mouth of the Rio Grande. In Mexican War, Gen. Zachary Taylor established a supply base at port of Brazos Santiago (since destroyed) on Brazos Isl.
