Fort Union National Monument, Mora co., NW N.Mex., 25 mi/40 km NNE of Las Vegas, covers 721 acres/292 ha. Ruins of last of 3 U.S. Army forts built on this site on the Santa Fe Trail and occupied 1851–1891. It once was the largest military post in the SW U.S. Authorized 1954.
