Ciudad Hidalgo (syoo-DAHD ee-DAHL-go), city (1990 pop. 48,476) and township, Hidalgo municipio, Michoacán, central Mexico, on central plateau surrounded by peaks, 35 mi/56 km E of Morelia, on Mexico Highway 15; 19°40'N 100°34'W. Agr. center (grain, sugarcane, beans, fruit; livestock). Tanning; lumbering; flour milling; soapmaking; forest prods. (resins, turpentine). It is the old Tarascan town Taximaroa. Sometimes Hidalgo.
