Dells of the Wisconsin, or the Dells, or the Wisconsin Dells, scenic part of the Wisconsin R., central Wis., NW of Portage. The river has cut a deep gorge through 8 mi/12.9 km of sandstone, which is carved into caves, pinnacles, and other interesting shapes, some of which are beautifully colored. Rocky Arbor and Mirror Lake State Parks lie N and S of the Dells. The Dells is a major recreation area of the Midwest. Town of Wisconsin Dells at center of area.
