Charlottesville, independent city (10 sq mi/26 sq km; 1990 pop. 40,341), Albemarle co., separate from co., central Va., 70 mi/113 km NW of Richmond, on Rivanna R., in Piedmont region; 38°02'N 78°29'W. RR junction. Mfg. (bldg. materials, electronic equip., furniture, computer circuit boards, consumer goods, printing and publishing); agr. (grain; livestock, poultry; dairying. Br. Gen. John Burgoynes captured army was quartered nearby in 17791780, and in 1781 Sir Banastre Tarleton raided the city. To SE are Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson; Ash Lawn, home of James Monroe. Michie Tavern Mus. and the birthplaces of Meriwether Lewis and George Rogers Clark are here. Seat of Univ. of Va., founded 1819 by Thomas Jefferson; the Inst. of Textile Technology is to W; Piedmont Va. Community Col. is to S. Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport to N. L.
