Grand Island
 
 
Grand Island, city (1990 pop. 39,386), Hall co., S Nebr., on the Wood R. near its junction with the Platte, 85 mi/137 km W of Lincoln; 40°55'N 98°22'W. RR junction. Agr. market (esp. livestock; grain, corn, dairy); also RR, and mfg. and shipping center. Mfg. (plastic prods., meat packing, agr. machinery, irrigation systems, transportation equip., bldg. materials, hides, trusses, food prods., printing and publishing). The Stuhr Mus. of the Prairie Pioneer, on an isl. in a nearby artificial lake, was designed by Edward Durrell Stone. Veteran’s Home. Settled 1857 on the Platte by Germans, moved 1866 to its location on the Union Pacific RR, inc. c.1872.
