spill (v.)

has two past tense and past participle forms. Americans use spilled for both functions, as in He spilled [had spilled] his beer; the British prefer spilt for both. The American participial adjective in the cliché crying over spilled milk sometimes retains the British spelling and the pronunciation it reflects.  1
