THE WAR OF THE THIRD COALITION of Great Britain, Austria, Russia, and Sweden. Britain had been at war with France since May 16, 1803. Napoleon planned to invade England from four new French harbors (Ambleteuse, Wimereux, Boulogne, and Étaples), but the resumption of war with Austria in Aug. 1805 forced Napoleon to concentrate his efforts on the Continent.
Austria agreed to a truce that led to the Treaty of Pressburg and, combined with a treaty between Prussia and France (Dec. 15), the territorial destruction of the Holy Roman Empire. The Austrian emperor, Francis II, had secured the title Francis I, emperor of Austria, and now retained this title alone.
