The expression, like It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees (said in the same broadcast; see Ibarurri on revolutionaries), became a slogan in the ensuing civil war. Previous attributions for this rallying cry include Marshal Pétain (1856-1951) during World War I: Ils ne passeront pas. |
