QUOTATION:You live on hopes, I guess. You always dream that someday you might have a lot of money, your ship might come in. But if the ship doesn’t come in, I’m going to work as long as I can.
ATTRIBUTION:Marion Gray (b. c. 1914), U.S. salesclerk. As quoted in Ms. magazine, p. 99 (February 1974).

A Woolworth’s clerk for more than thirty years, Gray had had to support her husband and their three children after he suffered a stroke. Now, her husband dead and her children grown, she was living with and caring for her elderly aunt and uncle.
