Where he was summoned by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in an attempt to effect a conciliation between Luther and the established Church; the words, “Here I stand, I can do no other”Madded in Luther’s handwriting to the original printed version of the speech—were later inscribed on the monument to Luther at Worms: Hier steh’ ich, ich kann nicht anders.
