(w s´l k ) (KEY) , city (1990 pop. 21,877), Hidalgo co., extreme S Tex., in the irrigated region of the lower Rio Grande valley; inc. 1921. It has a clothing factory, a huge citrus-canning plant, fruit- and vegetable-processing companies, and other agriculture-related industries. The city’s name was derived from the initials of the W. E. Stewart Land Company, which promoted the townsite in 1917. Weslaco is linked to Mexico by an international bridge. |
