(t m-mä´z t t-tô´n) (KEY) , 1855–1931, Italian statesman. As minister of foreign affairs (1903–5, 1906–9), he sought closer ties with the Western powers, while remaining within the framework of the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary. He also tried to improve the position of Italy in the Balkans. He was ambassador to France (1910–16), foreign minister (1919–20), and president of the senate (1920–29). A Fascist sympathizer, he was named by Mussolini president of the Italian Academy (1929–30). He wrote several books on political economy. |
