Swindon
city (1991 pop. 127,348), Wiltshire, S central England. Swindon was a small village until 1841, when the Great Western RR opened its locomotive and car works there. Since then, with government support, it has become the largest and most highly industrialized town in Wiltshire. Other industries are engineering, clothing manufacture, and tobacco.
