Stans, Maurice Hubert
(môrs´ hy´brt stnz) (KEY) , 1908–98, U.S. government official, b. Shakopee, Minn. He worked as an accountant for many years before serving in the Eisenhower administration as deputy postmaster general (1955–57), deputy budget director (1957–58), and director of the budget (1958–61). Stans later became (1969) secretary of commerce under President Richard M. Nixon, but resigned (1971) to work as finance chairman for Nixon’s reelection campaign. Thought to have been involved in the Watergate affair, he was indicted (1973) for perjury and conspiracy to obstruct justice and defraud the government, but was acquitted (1974) of all charges.
