(Marcus Aurelius Probus) (pr ´b s) (KEY) , d. 282, Roman emperor (27682), b. Pannonia. He was governor of the East under Marcus Claudius Tacitus, whom he succeeded as emperor. He defeated the barbarians in Gaul and in Illyria. He reformed the administration and embellished Rome with fine buildings. His troops mutinied, and he was killed. His successor was Marcus Aurelius Carus. |
