(y´zhf öt´vösh) (KEY) , 1813–71, Hungarian writer and statesman. A vigorous reformer and a Christian Liberal, he was minister of public instruction and religious affairs in 1848 and again in 1867. His novel The Village Notary (1844–46, tr. 1850) exposed the corrupt practices of county governments.
