| 1867–1966, American politician, b. Providence, R.I. After studying law at Harvard and in Europe, he was admitted to the bar (1892) and practiced in Providence. Active in Democratic party politics, he held minor offices before being elected (1933) governor of Rhode Island. Green was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1936 and served until his retirement in 1961 at the age of 93, the oldest Senator in history.
