(lw shärl äNtwän´ ds´ d vg´) (KEY) , 1768–1800, French general in the French Revolutionary Wars. He served under J. B. Jourdan and J. V. Moreau on the Rhine and distinguished himself in Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign. He saved the day for Napoleon at Marengo, but he was killed there.
