evergreen alpine and arctic shrub of the genus Empetrum (or, sometimes, other related species), bearing black, red, or purple berrylike fruits. Some are cultivated in rock gardens. Crowberry is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Ericales, family Empetraceae.
