In 1638, Chinchón’s wife, suffering from persistent fever, was treated with a native remedy made from quinaquina bark. As a result, the malaria-curing qualities of quinine became known in Europe. Linnaeus called the genus of quinine-producing trees Cinchona in her honor. |
