Bridgetown
 
 
city (1990 pop. 5,928), capital, commercial center, and chief port of Barbados, West Indies. It is, in addition, a tourist and health resort. Sugar, rum, and molasses are the leading exports, and Bridgetown also serves as an important financial center and transshipment point. The city was founded by the British in 1628.
