Berry, Charles Ferdinand, duc de

(shärl frdnäN´, dük d br´) (KEY) , 1778–1820, younger son of Charles, comte d’Artois (later Charles X of France). He served in the prince de Condé’s army against the French Revolution. His assassination during the reign of King Louis XVIII—an attempt to extinguish the Bourbon line—gave the ultraroyalists the opportunity to turn Louis XVIII against the liberals. Berry’s posthumous son was Henri, comte de Chambord.
