The prefixes contra- and counter- both derive from the Latin word contra, meaning “against.” Contra- means primarily “against, opposite,” and counter- means “contrary, opposite.” Thus contraposition means “an opposite position,” and countercurrent means “a current flowing in an opposite direction.”
