§ 6. affluence / affluent


Most people pronounce these two words with stress on the first syllable, (f´l-ns; f´l-nt). The pronunciation with stress on the second syllable, (-fl´ns; -fl´nt), is a newer pronunciation that has developed in American English, and probably occurs more frequently among younger educated people.    1
