VERB:1. To contaminate the reputation of: befoul, besmear, besmirch, blacken, cloud, denigrate, dirty, smear, smudge, smut, soil, spatter, stain, sully, taint, tarnish. Idioms: give a black eye to, sling (or throw) mud on. See ATTACK, CLEAN. 2. To hurl or scatter liquid upon: dash, slop, slosh, spatter, splash, splatter, spray, swash. See STRIKE. 3.
