VERB:1. To assume an obligation: contract, engage, pledge, undertake. See AGREE, OBLIGATION. 2. To guarantee by a solemn promise: covenant, pledge, plight2, swear, vow. Idioms: give one's word of honor. See AGREE, OBLIGATION.
