NOUN:1. A condition of owing something to another: arrearage, arrears, indebtedness, debt, liability. See PAY. 2. Something, such as money, owed by one person to another: arrearage, arrears, debt, due, indebtedness, liability. See OBLIGATION, PAY. 3. An act or course of action that is demanded of one, as by position, custom, law, or religion: burden1, charge, commitment, duty, imperative, must, need, responsibility. See OBLIGATION.
