NOUN:1. A part of the earth's surface: area, belt, district, locality, quarter, region, tract, zone. Informal : neck of the woods. See TERRITORY. 2. A surrounding area: environment, environs, locale, locality, precinct (used in plural), surroundings, vicinity. See NEAR, PLACE. 3. A surrounding site: area, locality, vicinity. See NEAR, PLACE. 4. A rather small part of a geographic unit considered in regard to its inhabitants or distinctive characteristics: area, district, quarter (often uppercase). See TERRITORY. 5. Informal. Approximate size or amount: range, vicinity. See NEAR.
