NOUN:1. An instance that warns or discourages prospective imitators: lesson, warning. See WARN. 2. One that is representative of a group or class: case, illustration, instance, representative, sample, specimen. See SUBSTITUTE. 3. One that is worthy of imitation or duplication: beau ideal, exemplar, ideal, mirror, model, paradigm, pattern, standard. See GOOD. 4. A closely similar case in existence or in the past: precedent.
