See CAUSE, PRECEDE. 3. To perceive by ear, usually attentively: hark, hear, heed, listen. Archaic : hearken. Idioms: give (or lend) one's ear. See SOUNDS. 4. To work and care for: do for, minister to, serve, wait on or (upon). See CARE FOR. 5. To have the care and supervision of: care for, look after, mind, minister to, see to, tend2, watch.
