NOUN:1. Something, as a type, number, quantity, or degree, that represents a midpoint between extremes on a scale of valuation: average, mean3, median, norm, par. See USUAL. 2. A settlement of differences through mutual concession: accommodation, arrangement, compromise, give-and-take, settlement. Law : composition. See AGREE. 3. The totality of surrounding conditions and circumstances affecting growth or development: ambiance, atmosphere, climate, environment, milieu, mise en scène, surroundings, world. See BE, LIMITED, PLACE. 4. That by which something is accomplished or some end achieved: agency, agent, instrument, instrumentality, instrumentation, intermediary, mean3 (used in plural), mechanism, organ. See MEANS. 5. Journalists and journalism in general. Used in plural (media): fourth estate, press. British : Fleet Street. See WORDS.
