NOUN:1. A building or shelter where one lives: abode, domicile, dwelling, habitation, home, house, lodging (often used in plural), residence. Chiefly British : dig (used in plural). See PROTECTION. 2. A particular geographic area: locale, locality, location. See PLACE. 3. Positioning of one individual vis-à-vis others: footing, position, rank1, situation, standing, station, status. See PLACE. 4. The function or position customarily occupied by another: stead. Archaic : lieu. See PLACE, SUBSTITUTE. 5. The proper or designated location: niche. See PLACE. 6. A particular portion of space chosen for something: location, locus, point, spot. See PLACE. 7. A post of employment: appointment, berth, billet, job, office, position, situation, slot, spot. Slang : gig. See PLACE.
VERB:1. To assign to a class or classes: categorize, class, classify, distribute, grade, group, pigeonhole, range, rank1, rate1. See GROUP, VALUE. 2. To calculate approximately: approximate, estimate, put, reckon, set1. See PRECISE. 3. To ascribe (a misdeed or an error, for example) to: affix, assign, blame, fasten, fix, impute, pin on. See GIVE. 4. To establish the identification of: identify, pinpoint, recognize. Slang : finger. Idioms: put one's finger on. See KNOWLEDGE. 5.
