| VERB: | 1. To make a thorough search of: comb, forage, ransack, rummage. Slang : shake down. Idioms: beat the bushes, leave no stone unturned, look (or search) high and low, look (or search) up and down, turn inside out, turn upside down. See INVESTIGATE. 2. To remove (an outer layer or adherent matter) by rubbing a surface with considerable pressure: scrape, scrub. See PUT ON. 3. To rub hard in order to clean: scrub. See CLEAN, PUT ON.
