NOUN:1. Informal. A sudden sharp, powerful stroke: bang, blow2, clout, crack, hit, lick, pound, slug3, sock, swat, thwack, welt, whack, wham, whop. Informal : bash, biff, bop, wallop. Slang : belt, conk, paste. See ATTACK, STRIKE. 2. Informal. A quick, sharp blow, especially with the hand: box2, buffet, bust, chop1, cuff, punch, slap, smack1, smacker, spank, swat, whack. Informal : spat. See ATTACK, STRIKE. 3. Informal. Rate of motion or performance: pace, speed, tempo, velocity. See FAST.
VERB:1. To decrease, as in length or amount, by or as if by severing or excising: chop1, crop, cut, cut back, cut down, lop1, lower2, pare, prune, shear, slash, trim, truncate. See INCREASE. 2. Informal. To deliver a powerful blow to suddenly and sharply: bash, catch, clout, hit, knock, pop1, slam, slog, slug3, smash, smite, sock, strike, swat, thwack, whack, wham, whop. Informal : biff, bop, wallop. Slang : belt, conk, paste. Idioms: let someone have it, sock it to someone. See ATTACK, STRIKE. 3. Slang. To exploit (another) by charging too much for something: fleece, overcharge. Slang : gouge, nick, rip off, scalp, skin, soak.
