Preface

Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition, represents a significant improvement in thesaurus making. The lexicographic staff of Houghton Mifflin Company, publishers of The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition, has designed Roget’s II to provide rapid access to synonyms, facilitating the choice of appropriate words to express thoughts.
All entries are arranged in alphabetical order and are identified by part of speech. A definition precedes each list of synonyms, and each list is complete in itself. Synonyms with special applications are listed at the end of each synonym list and are labeled to provide usage guidance.
Roget’s II is a source of appropriate words to express thoughts or ideas, guiding the user away from the common pitfall of selecting an unsuitable word. At times, however, one does not want only a synonym, and to provide the user with related words and words of opposite meaning to choose from, Roget’s II contains a Category Index. Each synonym group closes with one or more cross-references to this Index.
This thesaurus represents yet another major departure from traditional preparation of thesauruses. Every synonym and definition has been compared with the corresponding entry in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition, ensuring that the information in the Thesaurus is accurate and up to date.
An abiding objective of our reference publishing is to provide authoritative information about our language and guidance in its effective use. We believe Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition, will serve the user well in selecting the right words to express thoughts precisely and add colorful variety to expression.
