VERB:1. To turn away from a prescribed course of action or conduct: depart, deviate, digress, diverge, stray, swerve. Archaic : err. See APPROACH, CORRECT. 2. To turn aside sharply from a straight course: chop2, cut, sheer1, skew, slue1, swerve. Nautical : yaw. See CHANGE. 3. To change the direction or course of: avert, deflect, deviate, divert, pivot, shift, swing, turn. See CHANGE.
