Appendix II

Semitic Roots

ENTRY:ymn.
DEFINITION:West Semitic noun *yamn- and East Semitic noun *yamin-, right, right hand, south (on the right-hand side when facing east). 1. Benjamin, from Hebrew binymîn, son of the right hand, from ymîn, right (hand), south. (The Israelite tribal name binymîn should perhaps instead be understood as the “southerner” and to be compared to a people called “sons of the right/south” in Akkadian texts of the time of Hammurabi.) 2. Yemen, from Arabic yaman, right side, south, Yemen.
