Ashtoreth, from Hebrew ca t ret, taboo-deformation (with the vowels of b et, shame, shameful thing) of earlier *ca teret. 2a. Astarte, from Greek Astart , from Phoenician *ca tart; b. Aphrodite, from Greek Aphrod t , probably ultimately from Phoenician *ca tart, Astarte (influenced by Greek aphros, foam). 3a. Ishtar, from Akkadian i tar; b. Esther, from Hebrew est r, perhaps from Akkadian i tar, Ishtar (or from Persian sitareh, star; see ster-3 in Appendix I). |
