NOUN: A long, irregularly shaped gland in vertebrates, lying behind the stomach, that secretes pancreatic juice into the duodenum and insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin into the bloodstream.
ETYMOLOGY:Greek pankreas : pan-, pan- + kreas, flesh; see kreu- in Appendix I.
