1. To give one's consent, often at the insistence of another; concede. See synonyms at assent. 2. To arrive at or come into an office or dignity: accede to the throne. 3. To become a party to an agreement or treaty.
ETYMOLOGY:Middle English acceden, to come near, from Latin accdere, to go near : ad-, ad- + cdere, to go; see ked- in Appendix I.
