NOUN: Any of various freshwater algae of the genus Anabaena that sometimes occur in drinking water and cause a bad taste and odor.
ETYMOLOGY:New Latin Anabaena, genus name, from Greek anabainein, to go up : ana-, ana- + bainein, to go; see gw- in Appendix I.
