NOUN: A Middle Iranian language preserved in Buddhist and secular documents from eastern Chinese Turkistan that date from about the fifth through the tenth century a.d.
ETYMOLOGY:After Khotan, ancient kingdom centered around modern Hetian (Xinjiang Uygur), where the language was spoken, from Khotanese Hvatana-. See swe- in Appendix I.
