(NOOH-fuhn-luhnd, NOOH-fuhn-land) Province in eastern Canada consisting of the island of Newfoundland, the mainland area of Labrador, and their adjacent islands. St. John’s is its capital and largest city.  1
‡ Newfoundland became Canada’s tenth province in 1949. The remains of possible Viking settlements have been found in Newfoundland.  2
‡ It was the first overseas possession of England; fishing settlements began in the sixteenth century.  3
